TOP COURSE IN POLYMERS
Get all the insights about (biodegradable) polymers
The TOP Course in Polymers, better known as TOP Course, exists since 1988. The TOP course offers technical knowledge about (biodegradable) polymers, for anyone interested to expand its knowledge in the “world of plastics”.
Since the start of the TOP course in 1988, a lot has changed in the world of polymers and plastics. To name a few: the emergence of functional materials, nanotechnology, the border crossing between synthetic and natural (bio) polymers, new processing methods, polymers in medical technology, etc. The basic principles of polymers, the relationship between the chain structure and various physical and mechanical properties remain unchanged. And that is the backbone of the TOP course.

For the A-1 module, there are no educational requirements to enter. However, an academical intellectual capacity is desired (Dutch HBO or WO), as the course is given on university level. After completing the A-3 module, the level is equivalent to a (technical) university degree.
The main lecturer is Pieter J. Lemstra, Professor in Polymer Technology. He has more than 50 years of experience in the field of Polymer Technology and has been full Professor in Polymer Technology for 26 years. Also various guest lecturers are invited to give lectures and afternoon theme sessions.
Our participants could be professionals from the industry or governmental institutions, looking for in-depth insights or technical basics. The educational background of the participants is very diverse and is not relevant. It could be a technical background, but with insufficient specialistic focus on (biodegradable) polymers. Or a non-technical, in need of technical basics on the matter of Polymers.
When successfully completing all examinations for the three modules (A-1, A-2, A-3), the student receives a diploma. When participating in one or more modules, a certificate is awarded on the basis of examinations. Hundreds of TOP course participants have already received a diploma or a partial certificate.
You can register via the website: www.polymercourses.nl (from 1st of December 2018). Costs per Module, including teaching materials, are listed on this webpage. Cancellations can be done in writing or per e-mail, up to 4 weeks before the start of the Module. Cancellations within the 4 week period are not refunded, but can be replaced with another participant.
In Module A-1, the emphasis is on the characteristic phenomena of polymers / plastics and the application areas. Module A-1 is therefore very suitable for people who want to become familiar with the characteristic properties of polymers and plastics in a relatively short period of time and want to get an overview of current developments. This module is also suitable for researchers in the industry who want to refresh their knowledge on new insights into the basic aspects of polymers, as well as to take note of current developments.
In module A-2, the synthesis and process management in relation to the molecular structure of all major classes of polymers are discussed. Kinetics and catalysis are an important theme in this. Modern developments are dealt with in a number of case studies.
Module A-3 treats the relationships between structure, processing and properties. Between the molecular structure on the one hand and the (ultimate) properties in relation to processing methods on the other. The length scales are, where possible, exceeded and the properties discussed in several dimensions (1-D, 2-D and 3-D) with the emphasis on anisotropy. An important part of Module A-3 is the rheology of polymers as well as the various processing methods such as injection molding, extrusion, spinning, composite technology. During this module, we also offer several afternoon theme sessions.
